Fabulous Bernard. Wow what a busy day you have had - 3 in one day - thanks. Don’t go bursting your boiler, early days but all so informative.

My observation is that the insurance companies welcome you when you are young & fit - they happily pay for the various ‘clean’ surgery you or your family needs while you pay your premiums! However once you reach an age where you will possibly need any surgery (baby boomers look out!), then the amount you pay rises exponentially and/or various conditions become exempt from your cover……….

bingo.

they couch it in terms of providing a caring, needed service. but it’s resource extraction. when you’re tapped dry, they’re on to the next one. (ideally one that pay premiums but never needs any medical care. pure profit that way)

Put the money you would give them in a term investment or similar, you'll have better cover and can decide when and how you apply it.

a personal investment account might work here, but in the US (where this NZ government is heading us towards), they’ve created a healthcare system which sets out to bankrupt you. and frequently achieves it.

Yes, know several in US who've faced that fate

Dr Gary's insights into the private healthcare system was eye opening. I had no idea that's how it worked (sheltered little Kiwi I am), but it totally makes sense from a profit making point of view.

They won't tell you about that when selling a policy. I learnt from how they treated, or rather wouldn't treat, my Mum after decades of membership

healthcare (for them) is about extracting profits. when you’re bled dry, they’re done.

Oh Wow!

Us Kiwis really are ignorant to the realities of privatization.

That must have been hell for you & your family to go through.
